Do you want to take to take advantage of the wordl's most beautiful sky to setup your telescope? Chile's one of the best place for astronomy in the world, and more particularly the Rio Hurtado region is free from any light pollution. Since 2002 we are offering hosting services and are now ready to accommodate more instruments.
The Southern Sky Observatory is the only one in the world to offer for amateurs :
A remote controllable observatory for nighttime observations
&
A remote controllable observatory dedicated for solar observations
&
An on-site accommodation in a "base camp" for observers
There are currently 9 active setups on the site ranging from a wide angle system with a CCD camera to a 20" telescope. A new shared observatory has been completed to accommodate 4 new setups. By the end of summer 2025, two other shared observatories will accommodate 12 new telescopes.
We are waiting for you ....
The Southern Deep Sky Observatory is located in the South of the Atacama Desert, in the Rio Hurtado Valley. At aproximatively 500km from Santiago, 120 km from La Serena and 60 km from Ovalle ... also 60 km from the Cerro Pachon with their professional observatories like Gemini Sud, SOAR and the brand new Vera Rubin Telescope.
It is located on the summit of a Cerro at an altitude of 1700 meters above see level in a valley preserved from any light pollution.
The quality of the sky is exceptional with an average measurement on the Sky Quality Meter close to 21.72 mag/arcsec², a seeing almost always under the arc second during the night as well as nearly 320 usable nights per year.
The observatory also offers its members an on-site accommodation solution. Those who would like to come and enjoy their equipment on site can be accommodated at the Hacienda des étoiles with full board for a period of their choice. The accommodations are small, comfortable chalets ranging from 1 to 4 places. These are located 400 meters from the observatory just below it.
